MASTIFF PUPPY CARE SHEET
DO NOT SPAY PUPPY UNTIL 9 MONTHS -2 YEARS! Puppies have been lost due to early spaying/neutering
FOOD: Puppy food should be given to your puppy no longer than 12 weeks of age before switching to adult dog food. When switching to adult food, look for a food with the following ratios: 20-23 % protein and 12-18 % fat. Switching from puppy food to adult food should be done gradually. Too much protein and fat can cause health problems.
WATER: Unlimited amounts of clean fresh water should be available to your puppy at all times.
SUPPLEMENTS: Are not needed, and can harm your dog.
VET: Find one familiar with mastiffs.
EXERCISE: Exercise for the first year should monitored, mastiffs grow at a very fast pace which makes them frailer than they seem to be. Take them for short walks gradually extending walks after 12 months of age. Also since their joints grow so quickly make sure they do not have to jump into your car or walk too many stairs. Doing these things will cause a great deal of stress on their joints. Avoid outdoor activity during hot weather as this can cause heat stroke.
BLOAT: Bloat is common among the larger breeds. Bloat happens when the stomach flips or twists and is sealed at both ends. Stomach gases will become sealed under pressure and causes severe pain on the heart and an agonizing death follows if not treated immediately by a vet.
TIPS ON HOW TO PREVENT BLOAT: I feed three meals daily. Do not let your dog exercise vigorously after eating.
BURSAS: A swelling around the elbow. Do not let your vet drain bursas ever it will just fill again within a day or so. A thick soft bed often takes care of the problem or you can try Zinc 50 mg.The bursas do eventually go away.
LIFE EXPECTANCY: 10-12 years
TEMPERAMENT: Mastiffs are not aggressive but they are very loyal to their families.
SOCIALIZE: Mastiff puppies need as much exposure to new faces and new places as possible. The more socialization the puppy has will make a more confident adult dog.
TIPS: Mastiffs are very sensitive to your tone of voice and your body language, do not hit or yell at your mastiff. Do not give them tennis balls or socks because they can swallow them. Watch their tails they as can become lethal weapons, when wagging. Their drool can decorate a couch or clothing very nicely. I use wet wipes to clean it off furniture or clothing. Do not let them on your furniture or in your bed when a puppy or they will expect it when they are an adult. Can you imagine sharing your couch or bed with a 200 pound dog? When given a lot of love, attention, and guidance a mastiff will be the best dog you have ever owned.
